Brett Evans from Red Hawk Farm in Hurdle mills, NC. One of our most popular local producers is Red Hawk Farm. Red Hawk makes it possible for Weaver Street shoppers to enjoy locally grown, organic lettuces and microgreens year-round, and tomatoes March through August. Over the years, the farm has grown to include 13 greenhouses, including one large 100-foot by 100-foot greenhouse. All of the crops, which are grown in rich soil rather than hydroponically, are certified organic and have superior culinary characteristics. What began as mainly a year-round salad greens operation has become a mainstay for WSM for off-season cucumbers, tomatoes, basil, and more.

Plastic Free July may be coming to a close, but the goal of eliminating plastic pollution can guide our choices every day of the year. Choosing reusable, environment friendly products instead of single-use plastic is one of the most impactful solutions for plastic pollution.

Our Sustainability Team put together this Reuse Checklist for easy ways to reduce single-use plastic each time you shop or dine at Weaver Street Market.

Reusable containers for purchasing products in our bulk department. You help to eliminate throwaway plastic packing each time you bring your own containers for bulk items or use refillable water bottles and jugs at our water stations. Note that containers used for bulk items need a tare weight, which is provided at any cash register

Reusable produce bags and bread bags. You can purchase our plastic-free reusable bags in the produce and the mercantile areas of our stores. We also provide compostable produce bags and compostable bakery paper sacks near these products.

At our coffee bars, you have reusable options for both dining in coffee and takeout coffee. You can enjoy coffee in house at a discounted price with our reusable ceramic coffee mugs. For takeout, you now receive a 10% discount on drip coffee when you bring your travel coffee mug.

Reusable Bring It Back utensils. At our food bars, we have replaced single-use plastic utensils with returnable silverware. You can use the utensils for in-store dining or for takeout. We’ve had shoppers mail back our Bring It Back utensils from as far away as California!

Reusable shopping bags. One of the most impactful plastic solutions you can take is to bring your own reusable shopping bags. If you forget, try our Bring It Back sacks. Since we eliminated single-use plastic groceries bags in 2019, co-op shoppers have eliminated more than 1 million plastic shopping bags each year.

‌Weaver Street Market continues to celebrate Plastic Free July with the return of our reusable coffee cup program!

Co-op owners and shoppers can collectively make a big difference with the choices they make as they shop, and we’re excited to offer another way to reduce waste from paper cups and plastic lids with our ceramic mugs returning to the coffee bar for in-store customers. Priced at just $1.89 for a fresh cup or refill, enjoy the perks of reusability!
