MD Project Firstline Infection Prevention Education is Contagious in Maryland

We are very grateful to the two organizations and local health department that hosted our Escape Room training this month. It was a pleasure to participate in the Palliative Care Quality & Regulatory Conference in Columbia, where we delivered the Escape Room training to a dedicated group of skilled nursing professionals, pictured above. We also returned to Little Sisters of the Poor, St. Martin’s Home in Catonsville, to bring the Escape Room training to their Environmental Services staff, pictured below, who enjoyed the interactive learning approach.

Frederick County Health Department is an Active Partner Promoting Escape Room Trainings

Our most productive training to date was held at the Frederick County Health Department. We appreciate their partnership in hosting and actively promoting the training among county partners and facilities.

We hope the many health departments throughout Maryland will be inspired to rise to the level of Frederick County so we can continue to deliver this free hands-on training that helps healthcare and environmental services staff stay current on basic but critical infection control practices.

Want to see your team in our Escape Room photos? We are currently scheduling trainings through September so request your session HERE. This interactive team building exercise makes learning fun and can be used for annual competencies.

Health Quality Innovators Sponsors

Two Conferences in Maryland

Health Quality Innovators (HQI) sponsored a booth at the Maryland-National Capital Homecare Association Annual (MNCHA) Conference in Columbia on May 5. We enjoyed speaking with Caitlin Houck, Executive Director, MNCHA, and Kendal Lee, Program Administrator for the Maryland Emergency Preparedness Network, pictured above, with Lynne Layug from HQI.

HQI also sponsored a booth, pictured below, at the LeadingAge Maryland Annual Conference and Expo May 19-20, in Owings Mills. Thank you to Allison Ciborowski, President and CEO of LeadingAge Maryland, who has supported MD Project Firstline over the last five years, for stopping by to ask about our recent activities.

HQI visited with the Howard County Local Health Improvement Coalition on May 17. Community Health Workers (CHW) presented another Photovoice Exhibition in their series, this time focusing on the Columbia Village of Oakland Mills. The event included the awarding of certificates to high school students who completed their coursework through The Healthy Church to become CHWs. Congratulations to these inspiring students and their families!

Be Ready for Measles

Maintaining vigilance for measles is essential, and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is sharing guidance to support public health action. Use CDC's Be Ready for Measles toolkit to communicate with different audiences when preparing for and responding to measles cases and outbreaks. Resources are available in additional languages, and printer-friendly versions can be requested by email.

The first World Blood Donor Day was held on June 14, 2004, the birthdate of Karl Landsteiner, an Austrian-American immunologist and physician. Dr. Landsteiner’s discovery of the ABO blood group system transformed transfusion medicine and earned him the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in 1930.

Four international organizations organized World Blood Donor Day: the World Health Organization, the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies, the International Federation of Blood Donor Organizations, and the International Society of Blood Transfusion. These organizations created the day to raise awareness of the need for safe blood and blood products and to show appreciation of blood donors who donate their time and this life-saving gift.

This year’s theme is “Normalizing Voluntary Blood Donation.” The campaign encourages people to donate blood regularly and raise awareness of the need for blood donors. When was the last time you donated or encouraged someone to donate?

Join us in celebrating the following healthcare recognitions in the month of June:

Month:

Wound Healing Awareness Month

Weeks:

June 11-18: National Certified Nursing Assistants Week

Days:

June 2: National Healthcare Recruiter Recognition Day

June 14: World Blood Donor Day
