Updates & News

Contribute to Amigos' New Strategic Plan

Amigos is embarking on a new strategic plan. Continuing education and professional development will continue to be core to our work with member libraries. As we prepare for this new plan, we are introducing a series of short, one-question surveys to better understand the interests of members and libraries across our region. Members of our learning community might be especially interested to contribute to our one-question survey focused on the idea of connection – "How would you like to learn and connect with other libraries through your membership with Amigos?" We would love to hear from you and appreciate your engagement with our future work.

And if you missed our previous one-question survey about library technology needs, we would still love to have your feedback.

Amigos Adjunct Trainer Spotlight: Nancy Hu

When we caught up with Nancy Hu for this issue's Adjunct Spotlight, she told us her career has always been about creativity and communication—helping organizations tell stories that truly connect. "I grew up as a child of entrepreneurs and learned early to think with a marketing mindset," she shared. A passion for art and design led her to earn a Fine Arts degree in Visual Communications and Art and Technology from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. Over the years, Nancy has honed her ability to merge technology with artistic principles, creating campaigns that resonate across diverse audiences.

Her professional journey spans multiple industries, from her first role as an art director traveling the country for catalog photography and tradeshows, to becoming a Marketing Director leading the shift into digital marketing. Today, she's back in her hometown, shaping the brand identity of her local library and developing its voice on digital platforms. "Great communication isn't just about visibility—it's about authenticity and connecting people to the heart and mission of an organization," Nancy explained.

We asked Nancy what inspires her to teach, and her enthusiasm was clear. "I really enjoy talking about design and marketing! And Amigos gives me a platform to share what I've learned through my own practice," she said. Early in her library career, Nancy attended an Amigos session that left a lasting impression. "Being invited back years later feels like a full-circle moment." For Nancy, teaching is about empowering library workers and communicators—especially those for whom marketing isn't a primary focus—to feel confident using their voices to connect with their communities. "Every time I teach, I walk away with new insights myself," she reflected. "It’s a constant learning loop that keeps me grounded and curious."

When we asked how she continues to grow professionally, Nancy emphasized staying curious and open to change. "The past five years have been exciting for anyone working at the intersection of art, marketing, and technology," she said. She experiments with new tools, follows design trends, and attends vendors training to stay sharp. "The best communicators are lifelong learners," Nancy told us. "Growth means understanding where culture is moving and using the right tools to turn that knowledge into creative connections."

Check out Nancy's upcoming course, Message to Media: Media Production Essentials for Library Workers on March 19 from 10:00 am–12:00 pm CT.
