Training Preview

Library Services Trainer Spotlight: Kyla Hunt
Kyla Hunt is the new Library Services Trainer at Amigos. We asked Kyla to answer a few questions for us as we look ahead to our Spring schedule.

What course are you most excited about teaching this quarter (and why)?

Returning to a training position after spending time in a public library, I'm especially excited to teach The Essentials: Teaching and Presenting in the Profession in May. As someone who has held both training and front-facing librarian positions in my career, I find myself particularly called to encourage librarians and library staff to share their library work experiences with their peers. It’s important that librarians, library staff, and volunteers believe in the value of their experience and share the knowledge they’ve acquired throughout their careers.

What course would you most like to take this quarter (and why)?

As I am a passionate supporter of small and rural libraries, I would love to attend April’s Know & Bo Beyond the Books: Strengthening Rural Communities Through Library Engagement. During my time at the Texas State Library & Archives Commission I had the privilege to visit small libraries throughout Texas in support of the Small Library Management Training Program, and I saw firsthand how small and rural libraries connect with their communities in a multitude of ways. I’m interested in seeing the recommendations presenters Greg Carter and Dianna Locke make to support rural communities through libraries.

How are you spending your training time? What are you learning about right now?

During the past few years my continuing education has been primarily focused on advancing my cataloging, technical services and collection development knowledge. While I intend to continue to extend my technical services knowledge, I’m also attending online trainings and conferences focusing on public libraries and their intersection with and impact on their communities.

How did you start training in libraries - and how are you continuing to grow as a trainer?

I was lucky enough to take a library instruction course during my time at the University of Texas' iSchool, during which we had the opportunity to train rural libraries on using the TexShare databases. I then went on to head the Small Library Management Training Program at the Texas State Library & Archives Commission and the webinar program at TechSoup Global. These experiences, as well as my previous time at Amigos, have instilled in me the need to always maintain a learning mindset and to visit as many libraries as I can.

Join Kyla for her upcoming Know & Go: Understanding Creative Commons Licensing on April 30, her May course The Essentials: Teaching and Presenting in the Profession on May 21, and her June course Library Signage on June 10!

Adaptive Services for Staff Success: An Amigos Community Conversation
