Summer Learning Is Here: Train Your Whole Team Together

The Amigos Continuing Education summer schedule is now available, offering members a valuable opportunity to take advantage of one of their key benefits. For members, all courses are free for everyone at their institution, including administrators, librarians, staff, volunteers, and student employees. This free for all model creates a unique opportunity for teams to learn together, building shared knowledge and strengthening collaboration across the organization.

Attending a course together as a team can spark conversation, reinforce key concepts, and provide a foundation for applying new ideas in daily work. Amigos offers flexible participation options, including live sessions and recording access for 90 days, making it easier for teams to engage in ways that fit their schedules.

Consider sharing the full schedule with your teams and begin planning summer learning together.

A Courtesy Reminder: Duplicate Registrations

This past year's change to make Amigos' continuing education opportunities free to member libraries has resulted in a significant increase in registrations. However, this has also led to an uptick in duplicate registrations for the same course.

To keep our registration process running smoothly and manage the small per-registration costs that come with our system, and to ensure good service to members, we ask that individuals register only once for each course. We also ask that registrants use their work email when registering to maintain consistency in their learning experience and for ease of access. See a course that catches your eye and not sure if you’ve already registered? Search for learning@amigos.org in your inbox to find confirmation emails for any registered courses.

Thank you for your interest in Amigos' continuing education courses and for helping us keep our registrations clean and accurate.

You Asked, We Listened: Courses Returning to the Schedule

Amigos Continuing Education appreciates everyone who took the time to share feedback on courses they would like to see return to the schedule. That input plays an important role in shaping future offerings, and several requested topics are already being added back into upcoming sessions.

Event Planning 101 will return this summer on July 15, and Intermediate Cataloging: Subject Analysis is scheduled for September 10. Controlled Vocabularies and Taxonomies is also planned for later this year, following strong member interest.

In addition to these returning courses, Amigos has heard an increasing need for foundational training in everyday library work. As a result, courses focused on shelving basics and readers' advisory are now included in the summer lineup, providing practical support for staff, student employees, and volunteers.

Amigos values the feedback shared by its community and remains committed to offering training that reflects the real needs of libraries.

Conferences & Special Events

Call for Proposals: The Flexible Library

The call for proposals for the next Amigos online conference The Flexible Library, is now open! The conference will be held online on September 23, 2026.

The Flexible Library

Libraries continuously reflect creative and forward-thinking in their staffing, funding, and programming models. Library staffing and training structures help connect, train, and support all people working in the library, including associates, social workers, student workers, volunteers, and degreed librarians. Innovative funding models explore new paths towards sustainable funding, budgeting, and grant-seeking. New modes of programming lean into methods that incorporate our communities into the library. The Flexible Library explores the many ways libraries can lean into change with flexibility.

Session proposals might highlight:

  • Creative approaches to staffing, library outreach, and programming initiatives.
  • Connecting library staff with different educational and professional backgrounds.
  • Determining sustainable methods of peer support and idea sharing among library managers.
  • Implementation and management of a creative, robust volunteer and/or student worker program.
  • Development of a flexible mindset in a library built on legacy.
  • Staff training initiatives or internal programs focused on practical yet innovative topics.
  • Approaches to adapt existing library systems to future proof the library.
  • Strategies for identifying novel grants and funding models.
  • Evaluating programming initiatives to embed libraries into the community.
  • Identifying staffing gaps in response to community needs.

The deadline for proposals is August 12, 2026.

Presentations will be delivered online with technical support and moderation provided by Amigos staff. Proposals from all library types are encouraged.

Training Preview

Trainer Spotlight: Steven Pryor

Steven Pryor’s path into librarianship did not follow a straight line. When we caught up with Steven, he shared that his career began with an interest in computer science and a student job in his university library’s systems department. There, he built and repaired computers, supported helpdesk operations, and gained experience with software, servers, and networks. When opportunities in the tech industry shifted, that library experience became the foundation for his career.

Steven started in library IT at Saint Louis University, where he spent more than a decade growing into a leadership role. Encouraged by colleagues, he pursued a library degree and transitioned into a faculty librarian position at Southern Illinois University Edwardsville, where he led digital initiatives such as launching a 3D printing service and developing an institutional repository. After a brief return to systems work at the University of Washington, he brought together his experience with tools like Python and APIs in his current role at the University of Missouri. There, he teaches programming as a certified Software Carpentry instructor and leads a range of digital projects and services.

We asked Steven what continues to inspire his teaching, and he pointed back to his early days in IT. "Simple help desk work often involved teaching people how to use their computers more effectively," he shared. That hands-on, practical approach still shapes his teaching today. He values helping people connect technology and their daily work, while also learning from the questions and challenges participants bring to each session.

Steven stays engaged by following his curiosity. He regularly explores new ideas through webinars, conferences, and conversations with colleagues, often experimenting with tools firsthand to better understand their strengths and limitations. More recently, he has been exploring generative AI, approaching it with both interest and a critical perspective.

You can learn from Steven in his upcoming courses, Introduction to OpenRefine on June 16 and Introduction to Programming with Python and PyMARC on August 11.
