Dear Fellow Bobcats,
I am writing to share some significant news for the future of research and graduate education at Texas State University.
As we continue to build momentum toward Carnegie R1 status, we are taking an important step to recruit, support, and retain exceptional doctoral students whose scholarship and discoveries will help shape our future.
Beginning in Fall 2026, the university will provide tuition scholarships for research doctoral students who hold funded, 50% doctoral assistantships. These students will be eligible for a tuition scholarship for up to 21 credits per academic year for courses counting toward their doctoral degree. This funding is not available for students who are enrolled in accelerated online programs (AOP).
This is a move that has long been on our wish list and is made possible by TXST qualifying for our full share of the Texas University Fund. Importantly, it brings us in line with offerings from other research PhD programs across the country. Further, it comes at a time when many universities across the country are cutting PhD enrollment significantly.
This investment will support the research enterprise and the researchers that distinguish TXST as a leading national university.
Keep an eye out for further details coming later today from Provost Pranesh Aswath. Great things are ahead for TXST!
Sincerely,
Kelly Damphousse, PhD
President
