Cincinnati Zoo & Botanical Garden has a long history of caring for giraffes. In October of 1889, the first giraffe calf born in the Western Hemisphere was born here! We're excited to celebrate another giraffe birth this fall and have plans to continue to add to the herd!
In addition to providing a great home for giraffes here, which we'll be expanding in the near future, we partner with Wild Nature Institute in Tanzania to support their exciting work that includes using spot patterns to identify individuals and monitor their behavior.
After a week of collaboration, connection, and planning at Fellows Week 2026 in Cincinnati, the Cincinnati Zoo’s Hoffman Coexistence Impact Fellows have returned to their homes around the world, carrying with them renewed energy, strengthened friendships, and a shared sense of purpose.
We are excited to continue building on the momentum of the week and to support the impactful work these exceptional emerging conservation leaders are advancing in their landscapes, wildlife populations, and communities. This year’s cohort represents a remarkable diversity of conservation efforts, from restoring sea otters along the Oregon Coast to strengthening community livelihoods through baobab tree processing in Madagascar. While the ecosystems, species, and challenges they work with vary widely, each Fellow is united by a deep commitment to conservation and a belief that lasting environmental impact is achieved through meaningful collaboration with the people who live alongside and steward these landscapes.
To act in the spirit of community this month, join together with your neighbors for greater impact! Connect with your neighbors to host a neighborhood litter pick-up and help keep litter out of our watersheds.

At the core of wildlife conservation is community, whether that be a community in Tanzania that supports the giraffe populations they live alongside, or the community of conservation scientists who bring their brightest ideas to the drawing board, developing innovative coexistence solutions during Fellows week at the Cincinnati Zoo.
