For first-year student Melanie Escoto, college is not just
about earning a degree, it’s about building community, embracing
opportunity, and learning how to balance ambition with enjoyment. Currently
majoring in Public Health at California State University San Marcos, Melanie
has already immersed herself in campus life while maintaining an
impressive academic record. A member of the women’s volleyball club, an
inductee of the Alpha Lambda Delta Honor Society (ALD) Honor Society, and a
student on the Dean’s List, Melanie exemplifies what it means to be both driven
and engaged. Despite her academic commitments, she makes time to
appreciate the little moments that define her college experience, especially
the scenic views from the Green Roof atop the University Student Union
building, one of her favorite spots on campus.
Born and raised in Escondido, Melanie has always led an
active lifestyle. Growing up, she participated in a wide range of
sports including soccer, basketball, and volleyball. Athletics were not just
hobbies but a family affair; her siblings share the same competitive and
energetic spirit. This strong foundation in teamwork and discipline
has carried over into her college years, where she continues to stay active
through the women’s volleyball club. Her background in sports has
shaped her work ethic, teaching her valuable lessons in perseverance,
collaboration, and time management, skills that now help her navigate the
demands of university life.
Attending CSUSM was not originally part of Melanie’s
plan. She hadn’t initially applied to the university, but after
encouragement from her family, she decided to enroll, a decision she
now views as transformative. At first, Melanie planned to pursue
a major rooted in chemistry. However, as she reflected on her long-term goals,
she realized she wanted a field that blended science with broader social and
political issues. Public Health offered the perfect balance. The major allows
her to explore healthcare systems, policy, and community wellness while still
engaging with scientific concepts. A major turning point in her decision
was her acceptance into the SWIFT program, Scholars in Wellness and Innovation
Fast-Track. SWIFT provides participants with scholarships, tuition support, and
summer coursework, enabling students to graduate in three years instead of
four. For Melanie, the opportunity to accelerate her education while receiving
financial and academic support was a defining factor in choosing
CSUSM. “The SWIFT program was my primary motivator,” she explained, noting
how the structured pathway and additional resources made her feel
confident in her decision. Although Melanie maintains a 4.0 GPA
and juggles multiple commitments, she emphasizes that academic excellence
does not require sacrificing a social life. In fact, she believes the opposite
is true: balance is essential to thriving in college.
Her message to fellow students is clear:
“Manage your time! You can be a 4.0 GPA student and still
have a good social life with friends and family... don’t doubt
yourself. If you manage your time and balance things out
well, you're going to have a blast in college. If
you manage yourself correctly, you will have
fun. Don't forget to put yourself out
there because you've got friends waiting to be made out
there!”
