STS Business Meeting Update


Joseph F. Sabik III, MD, presided over his last business meeting as STS president and officially passed the gavel to newly confirmed STS President Vinay Badhwar, MD. 


Also elected during the Annual Meeting were Vinod Thourani, MD, as First Vice President, and Jessica Donington, MD, as Second Vice President. 


Other key positions include Vivek Rao, MD, elected as Canadian Director; Volkmar Falk, MD, elected as International Director; David Tom Cooke, MD, re-elected as Director-at-Large; Juan Crestanello, MD, elected as Director-at-Large; and Ibrahim Sultan, MD, elected as Director-at-Large. 


Wilson Szeto, MD, was re-elected as Secretary; Joseph Cleveland Jr., MD, was elected as Secretary-Elect; and John Mitchell, MD, was re-elected Treasurer.


STS members who attended the meeting also approved proposed bylaws amendments to the membership nomination process and creation of an Industry Relations Standing Committee. Leaders also provided year-in-review updates on the Society's financial state, advocacy activities, STS OnDemand launch, membership numbers, The Annals of Thoracic Surgery, and The Thoracic Surgery Foundation.

Day 3 of STS 2026 launched with energy at the STS 5K run/walk and continued at a strong pace through a lineup of distinguished scientific presentations. The day’s highlights also included Dr. Frank Sellke’s compelling perspective on innovation, collaboration, and mentorship as drivers of surgical excellence, alongside a dynamic compensation survey session that sparked enthusiasm and delivered meaningful, actionable insights for surgeons.
