Joseph F. Sabik III, MD, Elected STS President


Dr. Sabik, a heart surgeon and chair of the department of surgery at University Hospitals, Cleveland Medical Center, was elected 2025-2026 president during the Society’s Business Meeting. MORE

 

Shanda Blackmon, MD, Named Distinguished Service Award Recipient


STS is honored to recognize Dr. Shanda Blackmon as the recipient of the 2025 Distinguished Award, in recognition of her dedicated service and exceptional contributions to the cardiothoracic surgery specialty. MORE

 

STS Business Meeting Update


Jennifer Romano, MD, MS, presided over her last business meeting as STS president and officially passed the gavel to newly confirmed STS President Joseph Sabik III, MD.  

Also elected during the Annual Meeting were Vinay Badhwar, MD, as First Vice President, and Vinod Thourani, MD, as Second Vice President. 


Other key positions include Lisa Tchouta, MD, elected as Resident Director; Minoru Ono, MD, elected as International Director; Sigrid Sandner, MD, elected as International Director; Jessica Donington, MD, elected as Director-at-Large; and Felix Fernandez, MD, elected as Director-at-Large.    


Wilson Szeto, MD, was re-elected as Secretary; John Mitchell, MD, was elevated to Treasurer; and Anthony Estrera, MD, was re-elected as Director-at-Large.  


STS members who attended the meeting also approved the proposed bylaws amendment changes that allow vascular surgery residents to join STS as Resident/Fellow Members, but they must enroll in an accredited thoracic surgery program to maintain membership. Year-in-review updates on the Society's financial state, STS-PAC, The Annals of Thoracic Surgery, and The Thoracic Surgery Foundation were provided.

 

Factors Contributing to Lung Cancer Screening Failures


Case Western Reserve University medical student Victoria Shiqi Wu presented an analysis of clinical and demographic factors contributing to lung cancer deaths among patients undergoing low-dose CT (LDCT) screening. MORE

 

Study Compares Melody Valve and Mechanical Mitral Valve Replacement in Young Children


During day two of STS, Dr. Morgan Moroi presented a new study that sheds light on the challenges of pediatric mitral valve replacement and evaluates the potential of the balloon-expandable Melody valve as an alternative to traditional mechanical prostheses. She explained how findings offer important insights for treating young children with small mitral annuli, a population for whom MVR carries significant risks of morbidity and mortality. MORE
